DISCOVERY TO RELEASE AUDIO CD SOUNDTRACK
Fresh On The Heels Of 5-City Lollapalooza Stint
LOS ANGELES - Discovery Records will on August 27 release the audio CD version of DEVO Presents Adventures Of The Smart Patrol, the audio soundtrack companion piece to the iNSCAPE CD-ROM game written and directed by DEVO's Gerald V. Casale, and featuring new and old music from DEVO. The CD-ROM game is a surrealistic social satire created by Casale and DEVO Mark Mothersbaugh, founders and principal songwriters of DEVO, progenitors of American post-industrial techno-pop.
To make the release of both the iNSCAPE CD-ROM and Discovery audio soundtrack CD ever more timely, DEVO have freshly completed a six-day, five-city appearance onLollapalooza, exposing them to more than 130,000 music fans in Southern and Northern California, Washington State and Phoenix.
The Discovery audio album contains two brand new songs, "Theme From The Smart Patrol" and "That's What He Said," and a never-before-released version of "U Got Me Bugged." Another widely-unheard song from the set is a 1974 recording of "Mechanical Man." The collection also includes choice DEVO standards like "Beautiful World," "Whip It," "Peek A Boo," "Freedom Of Choice" and a 1976 recording of "Jocko Homo." Lastly, the album features two DEVO-inspired songs by two young outside artists"34C" by Brian Applegate, and "The Spirit Of JFK" by Scott Orsi.
"As soundtracks go-and I've heard many-this is a really great sequence of songs and a great body of work, and the songs are all important in the CD-ROM game. Plus, this is the best way to hear the complete songs," says DEVO member Casale, who, in the past year, also won notice for his direction of the Foo Fighters' video "I'll Stick Around."
Fans who remember DEVO for their revolutionary music and videos will not be a bit surprised with the game, which will do for interactivity what DEVO did for alt.music 20 years ago. An adult role-playing adventure with a mature and complex storyline, the title incorporates live action, animation and stunning special effects, all backed by an original music score by DEVO.
In the wake of Lollapalooza, DEVO has set upon writing new songs in anticipation of an album and full-costume tour in 1997.
